Today in class our 11th grade students presented their "identity quilts," which they made after we read Alice Walker's short story "Everyday Use." Students designed the quilts (materials: construction paper, scissors, glue, magazines) to show how the outside world perceives them versus how they perceive themselves.
When student J. stood up in front of the class to present his quilt, we all noticed that the center of his pattern -- representing his innermost self -- said "Tobey." He explained to us that Tobey is his imaginary friend who possesses all the qualities student J. does not. I guess this would also be called an alter-ego.
